Child of the 80's
I would like to express my gratitude for the late 1980’s/ early 90’s for molding and shaping me into the person I am today. I would like to explain a few aspects of my life that were created by the cultural influence that came from the 80’s and 90’s. I mean, just think how we would have ended up without things like:* Being able to dance like Carlton to the rap to "The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air"
* "Wax on, wax off"-ing Daniel-san and Mr.Miyagi
* The Smurfs
* The "Care Bear Stare"
* "Saved By The Bell"
* The Ninja Turtles. Without the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we wouldn’t have the insatiable urge to eat cold pizza for breakfast while shouting “Cowabunga” from the rooftops. They taught me that Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael weren’t just artists from the Renaissance period but they were also turtles. Turtles that had been genetically altered and mutated into muscular fighting teenagers who were trained in martial arts and given weapons.
* Acid washed jeans
* Rubik's Cube
* Pacman
* Original Nintendo, complete with Duck Hunt gun
* The Olsen twins on Full House
*Sesame Street. Without Sesame Street I would have a greater acceptance for the homeless population since the show taught me that the majority are Grouches who live in trash cans and cuss at people. I can also walk away from Sesame Street with the understanding that Snuffaluffagus was basically a junkie who just following Big Bird around asking him for favors.
* E.T. and Reese's Pieces
* A mom who wore shoulder pads
* The Thriller. The coolest dance ever.
* Ghostbusters. Now we know what to do "If there’s somethin’ strange in your neighborhood", and "Who ya gonna call?”
* The Cosbys, practically your second family.
* Tom Cruise in Top Gun who made us want to be a fighter pilot, or marry one
* "Choose Your Own Adventure" books
* Mr. Roger's Neighboorhood. Without Mr. Rogers we wouldn’t have the understanding that encountering older men with puppets is totally normal. However this is not the case with Pee Wee’s Playhouse as we later found out. Pee Wee’s Playhouse in reality probably did more harm than good.
My list of thanks and appreciation could go on and on, I just wanted to share the biggest contributors out of the bunch with you. I draw inspiration from my experiences of yesteryear and do my best to apply what I’ve learned to all that I do today.
Wherever you are, thank you late 80’s and early 90’s; thank you.
